These are just rough guidelines, and it’s a very individualized path ahead of you that you’ll need to follow. One of the biggest challenges some of my students had when starting out programming was that they couldn’t accept that their code wouldn’t work the first time it ran. Those who couldn’t stick it out and do the work didn’t complete the course. By contrast, even those who were less than inspired coders, but had the patience to try, fail, research some more, and try again were very successful.

You need to combine the disciplines of AI, programming, language, problem-solving, and even art to thrive on this career path. For text-to-image models, “Textual inversion”[56] performs an optimization process to create a new word embedding based on a set of example images. This embedding vector acts as a “pseudo-word” which can be included in a prompt to express the content or style of the examples. Generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools—including ChatGPT, Google’s Bard, Midjourney, Dall-E, and others—require that users speak their language. Ostensibly, that language is natural-sounding, everyday English (or whatever other human languages your chatbot of choice supports).
Consider for example the entitled work “Legal Prompt Engineering – Examples and Tips” by Dazza Greenwood and Damien Riehl that is posted at the law.MIT.edu website (see the link here). I might instruct the AI to assume that whenever I use the word “airplane” I am specifically referring to a Boeing Dreamliner that has a cruising speed of 560 miles per hour and can carry around 300 passengers. In this manner, and during an active conversation with the AI app, I can just mention “airplane” and the AI will realize what I am referring to.

On the other hand, Sarah Shaiq, former chief product officer at 3DLOOK, says that prompt engineering is having a moment now only because of the limitations of the current GPT architecture. “As the architecture evolves, the need for prompt engineering will get absorbed into the standard educational path on how to use the system,” Shaiq told us.
